How to Use This Generator
- Choose a grid size between 5x5 and 20x20 — smaller grids are quick warm-ups, larger grids offer deeper challenges.
- Select a difficulty level: Easy has simple paths with few branches, Medium adds more dead ends, and Hard weaves complex routes with many turns.
- Click Generate New to produce a fresh maze layout with a guaranteed solvable path from the top-left entrance to the bottom-right exit.
- Review the optional solution overlay before printing, or print the blank maze for students to solve independently.

The Maze Generator builds a solvable maze using a recursive backtracker algorithm. This algorithm carves out a grid by walking through unvisited cells, removing walls as it goes, and backtracking when it hits a dead end. The result is a perfect maze — every cell is reachable, and there is exactly one path between any two points. The entrance is always at the top-left corner, and the exit is always at the bottom-right corner, making each maze consistent and fair.
Choosing a size and difficulty
The grid size controls the overall complexity of the maze. Small grids from 5x5 to 8x8 carve quickly and are ideal for young learners, short warm-ups, or students who need a confidence boost before tackling harder puzzles. Medium grids from 10x12 to 14x14 offer a more engaging challenge with longer corridors and more decision points. Large grids up to 20x20 produce sprawling mazes that take several minutes to solve and work well for homework packets, rainy-day activities, or extended quiet time.
Difficulty works alongside size to shape the solving experience. Easy mazes keep the passages wide and the branches few, so the correct path is relatively direct and the solver seldom gets lost. Medium mazes add more dead ends and alternative corridors, requiring the solver to remember where they have been and plan ahead. Hard mazes aggressively branch and twist, filling the grid with many paths that lead nowhere and making the solver rely on systematic searching or backtracking strategies.

Printing and reusing mazes
When printing, make sure the maze fills the page comfortably. The generator automatically scales the maze rendering to fit most standard paper sizes. For classroom centers, laminate a set of mazes at different difficulty levels and let students solve them with dry-erase markers. The same maze can be wiped clean and reused by the next student, saving paper and prep time.
The solution view is also printable. Printing the solution on the reverse side of the puzzle sheet lets students check their own work, which is especially useful for homework or independent practice.
